Birth Physiology

چکیده

BASIC MAMMALIAN NEEDS Our current understanding of birth physiology is based on the adrenaline–oxytocin antagonism: when mammals release adrenaline they cannot release oxytocin. We use the word ‘adrenaline’ as a simplified way to refer to the ‘fight and flight system’. Such an antagonism has been understood for a long time and evaluated in relation to myometrial response (Zuspan 1962) and milk ejection response (Whittlestone 1954). The first data have been confirmed by clinical studies among humans (Lederman 1978). Today oxytocin is often presented as ‘the mirror image of adrenaline’. (Uvnas-Moberg 2003).

Developmental programming of a reduced nephron endowment: more than just a baby's birth weight.

The risk of developing many adult-onset diseases, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and renal disease, is increased in low-birth-weight individuals. A potential underlying mechanism contributing to the onset of these diseases is the formation of a low nephron endowment during development. Evidence from the human, as well as many experimental animal models, has shown a strong association ...

Inhibition of sympathetic responses at birth in sheep by lesion of the paraventricular nucleus.

Birth is characterized by a surge in sympathetic outflow, heart rate (HR), mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and circulating catecholamines. The paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus is an important central regulatory site of sympathetic activity, but its role in the regulation of sympathoexcitation at birth is unknown. To test the hypothesis that the PVN regulates sympathetic act...

The effect of sodium thiopental as a GABA mimetic drug in neonatal period on expression of GAD65 and GAD67 genes in hippocampus of newborn and adult male rats

Objective(s): Development of the nervous system in human and most animals is continued after the birth. Critical role of this period in generation and specialization of the neuronal circuits is confirmed in numerous studies. Any pharmacological intervention in this period may result in structural, functional or behavioral abnormalities. In this study, sodium thiopental a GABA mimetic drug was a...

Birth weight and lung functions in male adolescents.

The aim of this comparative retrospective cohort study was to examine the associations between birth weight and lung function in cohort of 70 adolescent male children aged 12-16 years. The subjects, born in nursing homes located in vicinity of the institution having their complete birth records were traced. They were male children between ages of 12-16 years. Lung function parameters were measu...

Accelerated senescence in kidneys of low-birth-weight rats after catch-up growth.

Epidemiological studies show a strong association between low birth weight and hypertension, renal, and cardiovascular disease, especially after catch-up growth. Senescence is an important contributor to the progression of chronic disease. Developmentally programmed premature senescence may be a link among low birth weight, catch-up growth, and adult disease. Low birth weight was induced by fee...

The spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) completes nephrogenesis before birth.

The spiny mouse is relatively mature at birth. We hypothesized that like other organs, the kidney may be more developed in the spiny mouse at birth, than in other rodents. If nephrogenesis is complete before birth, the spiny mouse may provide an excellent model with which to study the effects of an altered intrauterine environment on renal development. Due to its desert adaptation, the spiny mo...
